Not if it stays on private property. A container set entirely on your own driveway, yard or parking pad needs no permit at all — that covers most of our Chicago deliveries. The moment it has to sit on the public way instead — a street, a sidewalk, or an alley, which legally counts as public way the same as a street here — CDOT (the Chicago Department of Transportation) requires a dumpster/roll-off permit under Municipal Code of Chicago §10-28-799. That one detail catches people out more than anything else in this city: a huge share of Chicago lots are alley-loaded, and an alley is public way, not private property, even though it doesn't feel like a street. Outside Chicago itself, every incorporated suburb we serve — Oak Park, River Forest, Elmwood Park, Forest Park and Berwyn among them — runs its own separate permit process through its own village or city hall, independent of both CDOT and Cook County, which has no role in any of this street-permitting either way. This is a legal and safety issue as much as a practical one. Paint, fuel and oil, chemicals and solvents, lead-acid batteries, tires, medical waste and appliances that still need their refrigerant evacuated all have to stay out of an ordinary landfill load. Electronics are best handled through a certified recycler or a local collection event rather than the trash — Illinois EPA has the current guidance. Yard waste goes in its own box, and that box has a different exclusion list of its own: no treated or pressure-treated wood, no plastic planters, no fertilizers or chemicals, and no bagged household trash. Asbestos never goes in a container under any circumstances; it needs a licensed abatement contractor, and it is a genuine consideration in a city with this much older housing stock. Yes. Chicago sits in the broader Midwest severe-storm corridor, and spring into early summer — especially April, May and June — brings the highest risk of damaging thunderstorms, straight-line winds and hail in this area. A good share of our seasonal work is storm-debris cleanup: downed limbs, damaged roofing and fencing torn loose in a bad blow. During active storm stretches we ask for a pad that is clear and safe to work in — away from anything still likely to come down — and we keep extra containers staged so a wave of storm-damage calls does not leave anyone waiting. Winter here is genuinely cold rather than mild — sustained sub-freezing stretches, lake-effect snow bands off Lake Michigan, and ice are all realistic — so we ask for a cleared, safely accessible pad in winter, and boards go under every box year-round regardless of season or ground condition. Often not, but it is the right question to ask, especially on the older, tighter streets and alley-loaded lots closer to downtown Chicago. A roll-off truck needs roughly 60 feet of clear space to work in, about 25 feet of overhead clearance while the box is tipping off, and a flat hard surface such as a driveway to set down on. A tight lot, low tree limbs, overhead service drops or on-street parking can eat into all three.
