No. Placement entirely on private property — your driveway, yard, or a parking pad — is unregulated in Chicago. No permit is required for private property placement anywhere in our service area.

Any time the dumpster sits on the public way — a street, sidewalk, or alley — the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) requires a dumpster/roll-off permit under Municipal Code of Chicago §10-28-799.

Yes, and this trips people up constantly. In Chicago, an alley legally counts as public way just like a street. Since so many West Side lots — bungalows, two-flats, three-flats — are alley-loaded, a huge share of our jobs involve this exact question. If the box goes in the alley, it needs a CDOT permit.

No. Chicago is an independent home-rule city, and Cook County has no role in Chicago’s street or permit rules. Placement on the public way is strictly a City of Chicago and CDOT matter.

Each of those suburbs is its own separately incorporated municipality with its own permit process, independent of both CDOT and Cook County. We know each town’s process and can tell you what applies to your address.

We offer 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 yard roll-off dumpsters, with weight allowances ranging from 1–2 tons on the 10 yard up to 5–6 tons on the 40 yard.

Hazardous materials, paints and solvents, tires, batteries, propane tanks, and similar regulated items generally can’t go in a standard roll-off. Ask us if you’re unsure about a specific item.

For general household debris, no separation is required in the dumpster itself — though your regular curbside recycling should still go through Chicago’s Blue Cart Recycling Program rather than the roll-off.
